Government House Reception
09/10/2018
On Tuesday 9th October His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret’d), Governor of New South Wales and Mrs Linda Hurley hosted a reception at Government House for the Girls Academy.
His Excellency addressed guests and spoke about the fantastic outcomes evident in NSW as a result of the Girls Academy program.
In 2016 we had one Academy in NSW and now we have thirteen – and our program is making a big difference to the lives of NSW girls and their communities. In the past year Girls Academy students in NSW have attended class at a rate of up to 13.5% higher than the average for Indigenous students in this state.
CEO and Founder of the Girls Academy, Ricky Grace, highlighted the important role of community in the success of the Girls Academy program.
“Only with a strong community involvement can our program succeed, and we can start to close the unacceptable education and unemployment gap for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls” he said.
Guests also had the pleasure of hearing from Canobolas Girls Academy student, Sharone Moore who spoke about how the program has helped her and defined what the Girls Academy means to her.
We thank all of our guests for joining us for this fantastic event. Without your support the Girls Academy program wouldn’t be what it is today.
